Food Stamps – A Blessing or A Curse

Food stamps are supposed to help those who are poor or unemployed and help keep themselves and their families fed. There are people who take advantage of the system. It would be nice if people used food stamps for actual food, but this is not the case.  Many people buy mostly junk food. Instead of trying to maintain a healthy diet, they eat vein clogging meals everyday. A new study suggest that food stamps make you fat!

They buy cases and cases of soft drinks,  gallon juices containing nothing but sugar, etc.  Also these “needy” people (many are obese) who are buying ribeye steaks, and very expensive cuts of meat.  I heard of a food stamp total of over one hundred dollars just on candy.  Being a property owner, I see many single women “qualified” for food stamps  misrepresent eligibility of their income. Many are on the H.U.D section-8 housing program. They report that they are single mothers, they don’t dare report that they have live-in boyfriends.

I wonder how many lie just to qualify for government assistance.  And W.I.C. – another freebie that people are encouraged to lie to receive.  Some people don’t qualify until the assistance person redoes the application to reflect that they live alone.  The baby’s father lives there and most make a nice income.  And her income is usually over $30,000.  So the program benefits many people, but the abuse is widespread.

Curse of the stamps

Don’t even get me started on illegal immigrants who are also on these programs.   I’ve seen families that stop at the grocery store on the way home from church, and buy $500-$600 worth of groceries with food stamps…and load them in the back of their Cadillac Escalade.

Are food stamps a blessing or a curse? Some Christians believe that going on Welfare is a sin.  As a temporary help it’s justified, but to stay on welfare shows you are not using what God gave you to help yourself.  Welfare is a sin “when people cheat, are just plain lazy.  God provides for the sparrows, but they do have to build their own nests!
